Store Rotation: Roc Marciano

12.03.2020 - A decade of greatness

Store Rotation: Roc Marciano

Capping off a decade in which he build himself from a little known MC into an underground legend and all the way into a widely acclaimed artist, Roc Marciano dropped his seventh full length studio album, titled "Marcielago", late last year. The Long Island MC encapsulated ten years of work with his trademark flow, almost surgical storytelling, stripped-down instrumentals with cut up samples and enough swagger for a whole borough. But lets start from the beginning.

The 42 year old rapper from Hempstead, Long Island, New York, has had his work cut out over the last 25 years, hustling his way from the underground all the way to the top and into the collective minds of hip-hop fans around the world. He joined Busta Rhymes' Flipmode Squad in the mid-90s, left in 2001 to try and form another group project before finding himself on the 2005 Wu-Tang Clan compilation album, "Wu-Tang Meets the Indie Culture", and in Pete Rock's 2008 album, "NY's Finest". He earned quite some acclaim from those appearances, kickstarting his solo career in 2010 with the now underground classic “Marcberg”. The long player drew so much attention in the underground scene that it famously ended up being the topic of praise in a conversation between The Roots’ Questlove and none other than Jay-Z.

A decade later, Roc Marci is seven studio albums, a handful of mixtapes and collab-albums and countless features deep into becoming one of the most critically acclaimed hip-hop artists of his generation. He is unique in pretty much every way imaginable, with his calm flow and obsessively detailed story telling, his instrumentals, that distill tonal images from a New York unkown to the most of us and his underground approach of selling his albums himself before they eventually drop on streaming platforms. We've grown to love Roc Marciano over the years and he has quickly become one of the most played artists in our store and on our headphones.

Especially his story telling is immaculate, it never leaves you wondering. You marvel at the seams of the leather seats in the Rolls Royce, you feel the gritty and cold raind at nightfall in New York City and you see the morning haze hanging over Long Island while shifting gears in the Porsche Panamera. He tells tales from a bygone New York with photographic narratives over stripped down instrumentals, often eschewing hooks and traditional melodic arrangements altogether, all adding up to a large harmonious image, captured through his own lens.

Give everything he dropped a listen if you haven’t already, check our personal top ten of Roc Marciano tracks and stay tuned for our next instalment of “Store rotation”!
